So I recently learned that November is National Novel Writing Month. A friend at work participated in this insane event in the past, and ended up self-publishing a book with the writing she’d done. I figured, hey, I can write a novel! It sounds pretty cool, but I’m questioning my initial enthusiasm…
Basically, by signing up you commit to writing a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. You’re supposed to log in and upload your word count every day, or something like that. If you do the math, which I have, it comes out to about 1,666 words per day. Easy peasy, right?
Not really. I mean, this isn’t just a 50000 word rant, which in itself wouldn’t even be that easy. It needs to be like a structured story. With, like, characters, and stuff.
Also, November’s shaping up to be an incredibly stressful month for me. My work is moving to a new location, I’m moving to a new house, my credit card is reaching alarming heights, AND I’m supposed to be saving up for christmas and new year’s (yeahhhhh vegas!). Ok those don’t sound like very stressful things right now. Which is why I’m not worried yet. But I am absolutely sure that in about 3 weeks this simple task won’t seem so simple. But it should be fun all the same.
I have a story that I’ve been working over in my head for a while now. It’s kind of a film noir, and I originally saw it as a screenplay, but now I’m thinking that it could work as a short novel. We’ll see. I may go crazy next month, trying to keep up with this crazy word count. Or I may.. — no, I’ll probably just go crazy.
